A scoop stretcher, also known as a orthopedic stretcher, is a specialized piece of emergency medical equipment designed for the safe lifting and transport of patients, particularly those with suspected spinal injuries. Its most distinctive feature is its ability to be split longitudinally into two separate halves.

The stretcher is typically made of rigid materials like molded plastic or aluminum. To use it, the two halves are adjusted to the patient's length and then slid individually from each side, maneuvering them gently under the patient without the need for log-rolling or significant movement. Once in place, the two halves are locked together at the head and foot ends, effectively forming a rigid shell that encases and immobilizes the patient's torso, pelvis, and head.

This design is crucial for minimizing spinal movement during extrication, especially in tight spaces where a long spine board cannot be easily positioned. It is commonly used by paramedics and rescue teams for trauma victims who are lying on the ground. While excellent for lifting and transfer, patients are often secured to a spine board for prolonged transport or immobilization, as the scoop stretcher's two-piece design is less stable for extended periods.
