An IV stand, also known as a drip stand or infusion pole, is a piece of medical equipment designed to hold intravenous (IV) fluids and administer them to a patient. Its primary function is to suspend bags of fluids, medications, or blood products at a height above the patient, allowing gravity to assist in the steady flow through a tube and into the patient's bloodstream via a cannula.
The stand typically consists of a sturdy, wheeled base, often with four or five casters, which provides stability and allows it to be moved easily alongside a bed or chair. A long, vertical pole extends from the base, and its height is usually adjustable. At the top of the pole, there are one or more hooks used to hang the IV bags. Some stands also feature additional hooks or clips to manage the tubing, preventing tangling or obstruction.
Commonly found in hospitals, clinics, and for home care use, the IV stand is a fundamental tool for hydration, medication delivery, nutrition, and blood transfusions.
